IG-FEST was founded on the basis of a ‘Field-Emergent’ understanding of Self and therapy – but what does ‘field’ mean? Many different theorists inside and outside Gestalt Therapy have taken different philosophical positions on this, with Frank-M. Staemmler calling it a ‘Babylonian confusion’. I would rather welcome a diversity of different viewpoints, but to explore what is similar and different between those approaches, and what is the implication for how we do Gestalt Therapy.
In this webinar and discussion, I will present some philosophical background and some of the differences in how people have written about the field. I will present my own views, and invite both discussion and for participants to present their views, and what it means for us all when we are working with clients in therapy.
