New book by Peter

The ‘Active Principle’ in Gestalt Therapy and Other Essays.

I have often been asked: ‘Are you going to write another book?’. And I have always said ‘No’, because I am very wary of self-plagiarism, and felt that all I had to say at book length has been said in my previous books, particularly ‘Self in Relation’ (Philippson, 2001) and ‘The Emergent Self’ (Philippson, 2009).

And yet… my ideas, while still recognisable from my previous writings, have been maturing and changing emphasis through my thinking, reading, therapy, supervision and training work. The extended essay on the Active Principle in Gestalt Therapy is a description of an approach that honours the radical understanding of self inherent in Gestalt Therapy. The accompanying essays expand the themes of the Active Principle essay into specific areas of philosophy and practice, including Field Theory, the nature of truth, sexuality and time.

———————————————————————————————————————————-

In the past years, there has been a renewed interest in understanding Gestalt Therapy from the perspective of field-emergent Self, which is informed by the early texts from Fritz Perls and Paul Goodman.

IG-FEST is an international study group of Gestaltists who want to develop the kind of work that we as a founding group have been writing about and teaching, through online links of various sorts – webinars, peer supervision groups and practica, supervision days, discussion between trainers and therapists in different countries, online workshops, sharing writings and videos. Members are invited as collaborators, not as trainees, and will be showing what you are doing with what we have been teaching. The group will be actively multicultural, diverse and accessible to people with less time and income.

The resources pages will only be available to those who have taken up membership on the Join Us / Contact tab.

IG-FEST events (mostly free to members) can be viewed and signed up for on the Events tab.

Other offered events are posted on the Offered events menu item. Please look at these, people have been making offers!

Summary

Gestalt Community Meeting and Recording

In the meeting, Peter initiated a discussion about recording the session for AI transcription. Oleksii offered to record the meeting on his computer, but only with everyone’s permission. The group agreed to record the meeting, and Peter gave his permission. The meeting was also recorded for those who joined later. The attendees shared their excitement about the meeting and expressed their eagerness to learn more about the Gestalt community. They also shared their experiences and backgrounds, with some mentioning their locations and how they found the emails. The conversation ended with Peter inviting more people to join.

Website Refresh and Group Growth

Peter discussed the growth of the group, with over 250 members, and the need for more proactive participation. He also mentioned a technical issue with the website that the webmaster is addressing. Peter proposed the idea of refreshing the website and called for volunteers to help with this task. He also emphasized the importance of members taking initiatives and sharing their interests and writings.

Skill-Sharing and Community Revival Discussion

Peter proposed setting up a skill-sharing section on the website to facilitate sharing of individual skills and interests within the community. Hwee suggested reviving the community by engaging in a project, such as a tapestry of 100 stories from each member, and proposed that events could be organized in different languages to cater to a broader audience. Peter agreed to this idea and emphasized the importance of community members taking initiative and organizing events. Keigruner expressed interest in leading a workshop or movement therapy session but felt uncertain about his ability to do so. Peter reassured him that the person who organizes an event doesn’t have to be the leader and that support is available for those who want to try new things.

Supportive Atmosphere in Supervision Group

In the meeting, Julianne and keigruner discussed the importance of a supportive atmosphere in a supervision group. Hwee suggested that organizing events could be an entry barrier for some members, and proposed that having at least two or three people start an event could help. Peter emphasized the importance of a friendly group, not a safe space, to encourage critical thinking and idea development. Jutta expressed concerns about the Listserv and suggested the possibility of a forum on the website for interaction. Peter mentioned the existence of a bulletin board on the website that could be used for this purpose. Leo proposed creating a list of therapists and their skills for referral purposes. Peter suggested the idea of sponsoring people to attend conferences and workshops, with the condition that they present their learnings as an event.

Organizing Events for Emergent Self

The team discussed the idea of organizing events and workshops related to the theme of “emergent self.” They considered using funds to sponsor attendance at these events, with a possible lottery system for those interested in attending the same event. The idea of hosting a face-to-face meeting was also proposed, with the possibility of renting a space for this purpose. The team also discussed the potential for a “silent” mode of functioning within the community, where members could connect without feeling overwhelmed by too many events. The idea of organizing a study group for members during an upcoming conference was also suggested.

Online Conference Planning and Supervision

The meeting involved discussions about organizing an online conference, with Peter expressing concerns about diverting energy from other potential events. Hwee suggested that the founders could propose a conference to gauge interest. Piotr shared his thoughts on organizing a conference, while Jovita proposed the idea of a supervision or intervision group. Frank expressed interest in discussing the use of AI in coaching, and Tania suggested collaborating on supervision processes, particularly focusing on creativity.

Organizing Events for Community Engagement

The team discussed the need for a more organized and connected platform for events and discussions. They considered the possibility of hiring someone to moderate the bulletin board and mailing list, but also discussed the potential for self-organization. The idea of having structured stimulation, such as paid events, was also proposed. The team agreed that the platform should be more dynamic and not rely solely on individual energy levels. They also discussed the importance of maintaining interest and excitement in the community.

Gestalt Therapy Community Purpose Discussion

The group discusses the purpose and direction of their Gestalt therapy community. David expresses a desire for a clearer sense of purpose and social impact, while Peter explains the original intent was to develop an emergent understanding of Gestalt therapy theory and practice. Brid shares her experience using Gestalt therapy in the context of political conflict in Ireland, emphasizing its value in depathologizing experiences and supporting collective understanding. Gabriele proposes forming a subgroup to discuss working with refugees and people from war-torn areas, which generates interest from Volodymyr and Tania. Brid concludes by highlighting the importance of addressing somatic narratives and supporting ordinary people in understanding and coping with their experiences.

Building Connections in a Chaotic World

The meeting participants discuss the importance of coming together in a chaotic world to build connections and support. They express interest in organizing more regular gatherings, including a book club to discuss Gestalt therapy literature. Tania raises concerns about Gestalt therapy not being considered evidence-based and calls for more research to support its effectiveness. Several members share personal reflections on the value of the community and express appreciation for the relationships formed. The group also discusses potential future activities and ways to strengthen the organization.
